PCA – Shenandoah Wild and Wonderful West Virginia Tour

The Green Bank Telescope, Cass Scenic Railroad, Greenbrier Resort Bunker, and More

Join the Shenandoah and Blue Ridge regions of the Porsche Club of America for an exciting getaway into the wild and wonderful mountains of West Virginia. This outing will be filled with fun driving roads, beautiful scenery, science, history, trains, great food, camaraderie, free time to relax or check out other area attractions, and of course, lots of Porsches! Shenandoah’s own Jim Condon, a radio astronomer with the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO), will be our guide as we explore the Green Bank Observatory. Everything is optional, so pick the activities that you like or suit your schedule.

Please make your hotel reservations as soon as possible to take advantage of the discounted group rate. (See complete details below for room blocks at the Best Western Hotel and Conference Center in Waynesboro, VA for Friday night and the Snowshoe Resort in Snowshoe, WV for Saturday and Sunday nights.)

Saturday, August 8

  • Scenic drive to the Green Bank Observatory in Green Bank, WV
  • Groups will start from the Mountainside Grille near Crozet (with pick up points in Churchville and Monterey) and Roanoke near the intersection of Route 419 and I-81, Exit 141. Roanoke participants call Gary Bell at (540) 721-2914 for details.
  • Visit to the NRAO’s Green Bank Observatory (Lunch; Movie and overview of the observatory; Tour of the control room, electronics lab, and Science Center; Bus ride down to see the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope (GBT), the world’s largest moving structure on land; Free time to look at early radio telescopes, continue exploring the Science Center, and visit the Galaxy Gift Shop)
  • Public visitor screening is required to enter certain special “high technology” areas of the Green Bank Observatory. (Click on http://shn.pca.org/archive/GBscreen.php to fill out form and submit information required. Please make sure that you have submitted your data by Monday, August 3 to allow for adequate processing time.)
  • Dinner at the Brazen Head Inn in Mingo, WV.
  • Stay overnight at Snowshoe Resort

 

Sunday, August 9

  • Breakfast at The Raven Grille in Snowshoe, WV (overlooking the golf course)
  • Ride on the Cass Scenic Railroad in Cass, WV with boxed lunch at Whittaker Station (Also includes admission to the Cass Showcase, the Railroad and Logging Camp Tour, and interpretive activities, as available, including maintenance shop tours)
  • Fun Run to exercise our Porsches on the winding mountain and valley roads of West Virginia, relax, or do your own thing in the afternoon (Fun Run will start in Cass and end at the Rimfire Lodge at Snowshoe Resort.)
  • Dinner at The Junction Restaurant & Saloon in Snowshoe’s mountain top village
  • Stay overnight at Snowshoe Resort

 

Monday, August 10

  • Breakfast at The Junction Restaurant & Saloon in Snowshoe’s mountain top village
  • Scenic drive to The Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs, WV (Group tour of “The Bunker” – a former emergency Cold War fallout shelter and top secret U.S. government relocation facility for Congress, Lunch at The Greenbrier)
  • Continue on your own to explore the area or return home
