Are you a proud owner of a 350SL, 450SL, 380SL, 560SL R107 Mercedes, or are considering acquiring one, come to the Peachtree Section R107 Gathering on Saturday, May 4, 2019.
The plan is to convoy R107's from Atlanta, Athens, and Augusta or just drive from your home – arriving Crawfordville, GA at 10:00. I am sure you will spend time admiring each other’s cars in the Courthouse square. We will have lunch around noon at Mama Chucha’s Cafe (ordering off the menu), socialize and discuss car valuations and technical issues.
The R107 is the insider's designation for the Mercedes SL sold in the US from 1972 to 1989 and Peachtree Section members own 44 of them. At various times it was called the 350SL, the 450SL, the 380SL and the 560SL (in the US). As the follow-on to the Pagoda (W113), it featured a V-8 engine for the first time in an SL and was the only convertible Mercedes during these years. It had many innovations such as crumple zones, high strength a pillars and windscreen frame for roll over protection, and an impact absorbing steering wheel. There was also a coupe version, referred to as the C107 that was available from 1972 through 1981. R107's are generally quite reliable. However, rust can be an issue for cars before 1986 and there was a front crossmember recall affecting earlier years of the cars. The 380SL from 1981 to 1983 had a single row timing chain that proved troublesome.
Mercedes sold over 187,000 of this model in the US, Peachtree Section members own 44 examples of the R107. Today’s purchase prices are quite reasonable, and one can expect an increase in values of nice examples over time. Not yet an owner of an R107? Now may be the time to purchase one and this event will be a great time to learn about the cars by talking with owners and experts. Planned discussions at lunch will focus on investment value and the technical issues associated with 107's.
Those who choose to convoy can depart Atlanta 8:00 from Dunking Donuts at 2555 Wesley Chapel Rd, Decatur, GA, or depart Athens 8:30 from Mercedes Benz of Athens or depart Augusta 9:00 from Mercedes Benz of Augusta. It will be a fun and educational event and anyone with an interest in the R107 should plan to attend the 1st Peachtree Section R107 Gathering Saturday May 4th! A $5 fee is requested
