Covered Bridges of North Georgia

Covered Bridges of North Georgia

About this event

The Covered Bridges of North Georgia

Get ready for a scenic ride through North Georgia to visit several of the covered bridges located throughout the area.  We will meet in Cumming to begin our tour at 8:00 am.  The specific location will be provided.  You will be given a series of detailed directions and questions about things along the route. There will be a first, second and third place prize for the closest mileage and most correct answers.

Some of the Bridges we’ll visit:

  1. Poole's Mill Covered Bridge - Poole's Mill Covered Bridge Cumming, Forsyth County 1901 Town lattice, 94.6 feet long over Settendown Creek. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places
  2. Lula Covered Bridge - Gainesville, Hall County – 1915 - King post, 34 feet long over Grove Creek.
  3. Stovall Mill Covered Bridge - Helen, White County 1895         Queen post, 36.8 feet (11.2 m) long over Chickamauga Creek.
  4. Hurricane Shoals Covered Bridge and Park GA Hwy 82 Spur Maysville, GA 30558 Reconstructed covered bridge, gristmill
  5. Cromer's Mill Covered Bridge - Carnesville, Franklin County 1906  Town lattice, 132 feet (40 m) long over Nails Creek. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places

Along the way you’ll enjoy scenic North Georgia.  The route will take us to the location of the first gold rush in Georgia and no it’s not Dahlonega.  There will be an opportunity to stop in Dahlonega as we pass through for a quick visit before we continue our journey.

The route will take us through the historic town of Clermont.  There’s not much to see there except the old hotel.  We’ll continue up to Stovall Mill Covered bridge outside Helen.  Along the way you can stop at the Old Sautee Store.  Well weave our way to Maysville to see Hurricane Shoals Covered Bridge and then down to Carnesville to see Cromer’s Mill Covered Bridge and finally we’ll double back to Lula to see Lula Covered Bridge before heading to downtown Gainesville for a nice dinner at a local Italian restaurant, Cosa Nostra.

TThis should be an exciting day. Cost for this event is and $5.00 per person will include refreshments and snacks.  Snacks and beverages will be provided at the start and along the way

Note:  The route and bridges visited may change depending on the total time to run the route.  But you should still get a feel for the nostalgic era of the covered bridges in Georgia’s history.
