BMW CCA Membership is NOT Required for the HSS.  In 2018 and moving forward, at time of HSS registration, you are not required to be a BMW CCA club member. Anyone, non-members and members alike, can register for NCC HSS program. Note that this policy applies ONLY to the HSS and not to other programs or events.

 NOTE:

As of 2017, Snell 2010 and later helmets are required.  SNELL 2005 rated helmets are no longer authorized for use. A helmet is required for the afternoon sessions at the HSS.

At the very least, your HSS registered vehicle must be quiet enough to allow appropriate in car, on-track, communication between instructor and student and must also not interfere with communication between other instructors/students on track. If you're not certain if your car is acceptable, test the decibels or contact us.

Event requirements

About Our Instructors:

Our focus is on skills, not speed, and our overriding concern is with your safety and that of your car.  We select our school instructors very carefully, not simply for their technical knowledge and accomplishments as drivers, but also for their abilities to impart that knowledge to their students in a clear, concise, and professional manner.

Highway Safety School Events:

The primary goal of these schools is to develop and hone your car-control skills. It is not to drive fast, although speed will come with improving skills.  We seek to produce not necessarily the fastest, but the most proficient drivers possible.

No single drivers' school will ever convey all there is to learn about driving. In this sense, our HSS are part of a continuous learning environment.

Each HSS consists of driving exercises on the track and at the skid pad, as well as classroom sessions. An in-car instructor will work with you to help you improve your driving skills.

What does the day look like?

CLASSROOM: Short presentations – Car dynamics, correct seating positions, typical distractions, plus an overview of the day’s activities.  Classroom sessions present the underlying mechanics of your car's behavior and how your inputs as a driver affect it. We present basic driving theory, the physics of car behavior (i.e., the "why it works" of driving) and discussions of the techniques of advanced car control.

THRESHOLD BRAKING: Entrants are taught proper techniques of car control while using maximum braking in a straight line and while the car is in a turn.

SLALOM  : Medium speed serpentine course through safety pylons laid out to highlight car control methods, eye - hand movements, “ocular driving skills” and car control

SKID PAD : A wet, slippery circular course used to educate entrants on loss of traction and demonstrate front and rear skid recovery techniques. Skid pad sessions will allow you to begin to master the skill of controlling your car at the limits of adhesion. You will learn how to control understeer (when your front tires lose adhesion) and oversteer (when your rear tires lose adhesion.)

AFTERNOON LAPS AROUND THE JEFFERSON TRACK: The afternoon sessions will be spent with you driving your car around the Jefferson Circuit, again with your instructor in the car. You are given an introduction to racing lines and racing techniques at a controlled pace. Speeds are limited to 70 MPH.  Instructor assisted passing is allowed.  Cars are staged so they are separated by a large distance.

Notes about our Admissions Policy:
Due to strong demand, we are sometimes unable to accommodate all the students who apply.  For HSSs where applications exceed our school capacity, we will admit students as registrations are completed (first come, first served).

Sharing of Cars:
Prior approval is required for students intending to share cars and for changes in car type after registration!!  You can share cars but we need to make sure you are registered in two different groups.

Priority Assignment:
Student registrations that exceed our HSS capacity or instructor load will be waitlisted.

Important Notes:

  • New for 2018; Summit Point Motorsports Park has a maximum allowable decibel of 103 for HPDE and non-race programs (which includes this HSS).
  • All cars must be quiet enough to allow for in-car communication, must have passenger seats and equal restraint systems for both passenger and driver.
  • Functional, securely attached lap and shoulder belts are required for both front seats.  The front seats must have equal restraint systems in place and operational (e.g., if the driver has a five-point harness, the passenger must have a five-point harness as well.)
  • Performance-enhancing modifications inhibit learning and are strongly discouraged.
  • R-compound (racing) tires are NOT allowed for any student vehicle.
  • If roll bars or cages are installed, they must be fully padded above the level of the front door window sills (anyplace the driver’s/passenger’s head could come in contact with the roll cage).
  • Cars must be inspected by a qualified service facility before the event.  A properly completed tech inspection form (supplied) must be presented at the track.  It is your responsibility to ensure that your car is safe and roadworthy. Race cars must present a current annual race car inspection.
  • Helmets ---Note these requirements for 2018 --- Must be certified to Snell M- or SA-standards, 2010 or later.  Full-face helmets with SA-2010 or later certifications are strongly recommended.  The Snell Memorial Foundation’s certification will be found on a sticker inside the helmet.  The National Capital Chapter does not supply helmets.
  • Helmets can be rented (or purchased) from OG Racing (www.ogracing.com) if you do not already own one.  You should make arrangements before arriving at the track.   You only need helmets for the afternoon sessions.
